Why I'm Never Using Coconut Oil On My Hair Again

There seems to be a real craze at the moment with coconut oil and all the benefits it has to to you hair, nails and skin. The blogging world went mad for coconut oil hair masks to treat dry and damaged ends as well as promoting hair growth. I gave it a go and as you can tell from the title of this post, it didn't go well.

My hair has always been in pretty good condition considering its length, (about 20 inches!) as I rarely ever use hot styling tools on it, and has always been relatively frizz free. I recently decided to change up my hair to an ombre which required using bleach on the ends. I have noticed my ends are drier than usual which I was expecting so I decided to treat my hair to a nourishing coconut oil hair mask.

I decided that I was going to do an over night treatment so I covered my hair from root to tip in the oil. Some of you may ask why I covered my whole head if my ends were the only problem. Coconut oil is apparently meant to promote thicker hair growth so I thought why not cover myself in it!

When it came to washing it out the next morning I was horrified by how difficult it was to remove. I was expecting it to take a few washes of a good clarifying shampoo but I seriously under estimated it's stubbornness. After about 8 washes of shampoo my hair still felt disgustingly greasy. I then read on a forum to try use conditioner only and leave it to sit in the hair for around 15 minutes and still no success. I was left with no other option but to reach for the fairy liquid to get it out! After 2 washes with that, the oil finally lifted. As you can probably imagine my hair felt so dry and brittle using dish soap which completely reversed any benefits of using the coconut oil in the first place.

After this ordeal, it's safe to say that coconut will not be going on my hair again. I had no idea it would be that difficult to remove and after using dish soap on my hair, made my hair drier than it was before. I don't know if it was the amount that I used, where I applied it or my hair type but I just didn't get the amazing results everyone else did. I am going to try using the coconut oil I have left for other things like a face mask or an intense moisturiser. I will let you guys know how I get on with that.

If you are considering using coconut oil on your own hair I would suggest using a very small amount on your ends and see how you get on before going all the way like I did! I would love to know your own experience with coconut oil and how it worked for you, so please leave your comments in the section below!

  1. I had a similar situation with olive oil when I was younger ... literally scarred me for life! Put me off trying coconut oil. Sorry to hear it was such a disaster :( I recently did a review of a dove warming mask on my blog which is absolutely lovely if you feel your hair needs some nourishing.

  3. Wow I can't believe this happened! I am so scared of using deep treatments on my hair because I don't want this problem, so I only use coconut oil on my ends (well, when my hair was long).

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner works WONDERS and it's so inexpensive!!! I used to after bleaching my entire head (serious mistake...), and I saw a difference almost instantly.

  8. I treat my hair once or twice in a month with overnight coconut oil treatment. I have long hair but i still use tiny amount of oil warming it in a microwawe for ~10secs, next morning i wash my hair 2-3 times with shampoo for greasy hair and results just blows me away every time I do this procedure. My hair feels super soft and very very shiny. I am sorry to hear that yours went wrong! xx
